Solo Compositions by Gabriele Proy (Austria)
“The Japanese word 起源 ‘kigen’ means origin. In my composition ‘Kigen’ I explore origins and beginnings – the origins of Western and Asian music-making and sound concepts but also the origins and beginnings of life.
As sound material, I have chosen the two pentatonic modes ‘ritsusen’ and ‘ryosen’. Individual motifs and tonal sequences of these two Japanese scales – the female scale ‘ritsusen’’ and the male scale ‘ryosen’’ – are woven throughout the entire composition.
Origins and beginnings in this context also mean thinking about musical identity. A reflexion on the ways of listening to music and concepts of sound. Pausing to reflect and finding a tonal home in the exciting encounter of western and Asian sound worlds.”
“Kigen” by Gabriele Proy was commissioned by the Vienna Seminar of Nobel Laureates and celebrated its world premiere on 2 October 2008 when it was performed by Manon-Liu Winter at the opening of the Third Vienna Seminar of Nobel Laureates in the Great Hall of the University of Vienna. The composition is dedicated to the pianist Manon-Liu Winter.
